World Cup Semifinal 1: India Vs New Zealand

Our Good, Bad and Wholesome Ten Moments

India is right now defying the law of averages!

They march into the finals but not with a little disturbance caused by New Zealand, but it didn’t deter them for too long. They just marched into the finals with record breaking run totals, centuries and wicket hauls! New Zealand had the barest of hope but they were the best team to beat India this year at the World Cup and they tried hard, you have to feel for Kane mama, Daryl Mitchell, Trent Boult, Southee, Santner and the rest of the gang! They’re quality bunch and they will be missed, most of them may not even play the next world and that’s very saddening that they go out at least Kane, Boult and Southee probably won’t see another World Cup. So let’s get into the top 10 iconic moments probably from the best match we witnessed in this year’s World Cup!

Everyone at Wankhede

It feels like everyone was at the Wankhede?

You see Pandya is drinking coconut water with John Abraham and other Bollywood celebrities

Yuzi Chahal chilling as usual

We spotted the real Thala / Rajnikanth in the middle of the match

Sachin Tendulkar was there, I think we saw a lot more him than we expected, did he attend all of the matches at Wankhede? There was also the statue unveiling, so he was around, he’s having the time of his life and everyone who gets a view of Sachin is too.

David Beckham, this was the most random celeb appearance, first I thought do you think he ever played or watched cricket but then I remember he’s from England, he must’ve watched a few matches at some point.

WTF is with that pitch nonsense?

How is it possible that the pitch controversy crops up just the mornig of the match, somehow this article surfaces saying The Indian Express is reporting that the BCCI (The Board of Control for Cricket in India) has asked curators at Wankhede Stadium to shave off most of the grass on the surface to create a slow track.

“It’s felt like a tournament in India for India and for India to win.

Apparently the BCCI local curators look after pitches across venues for the World Cup while the ICC also sends their own experts to each venue and game. There’s also talk about not using the agreed pitch for the final. There was an ICC consultant who looked at the pitch beforehand. BCCI is known for it’s brazenness because it’s wielding power in the world of cricket and is the richest board in the world, it’s known for doing a lot of crap and I do believe that something happened, but it’s hard to prove it, if what they say is true about the Finals pitch where the ICC curator said let’s use pitch x and BCCI still went with pitch y, it’s quite possible that’s what happens in India when anyone had loads of money and power.

I honestly don’t think doctoring a pitch to impact a match is possible, because there’s no reason forthem to do it, I didn’t hear the players complain about it or the coaches. They both got a good look at the pitch beforehand it’s all out there in the open.

But finally I think India has been so good that they don’t really need to doctor a pitch, they defeated the second best side by bowling them out for 80 something runs.

They steamrolled every other team winning 9 out of 9 and now 10.

India seemed a little rattled today!

India wasn’t tested till now, everything just worked for them. Infact they finished a few games early and even the audience got used to that, they’re not expecting at least 4 wickets to fall within the first 10 overs.

But today, there was a little tension, there were jitters during the Mitchell-Williamson partnership, you could see some misfields, long faces when even bowlers like Kuldeep, Bumrah and Siraj were struggling. Shami dropped a sitter, Kane would’ve been back way before. But he said in the post-match chat that he felt bad and he came back with his best spell yet!

At one point I knew you just had to bring back Shami and he’ll take a wicket for you. Daryl Mitchell was hitting Bumrah and Shami, whenever they came back he would loft them for big sixes over mid-on and mid-off. That’s some steel balls to hit Shami and Bumrah but eventually Shami broke the partnership.

So we know that India can be rattled, we always knew this but I guess didn’t acknowledge it. Just observe Rohit when things aren’t going the team’s way, he’s agitated but you know what there’s some change there, the last few matches he’s a stoic version of himself, with Rohit I don’t know if he’s calm or just exhausted given the weather conditions in most cities I wouldn’t blame him.

This was a good thing, it’ll give them an opportunity to fix it before the finals? It didn’t matter because 399 was too much anway, I felt that they already won after that first innings.

The rattling didn’t last long, they won the game after that partnership easy peasy!

The New Zealand journey so far!

Let’s just look at how the Blackcaps have performed so far, they have an odd streak of wins and losses.

Their captain was absent, and Latham did a fantastic job in his absence, it didn’t feel like something was missing. The team had their roles sorted out.

They started with a top win again England followed by 3 more easy ones
They lost against India, the top team in the tournament so that’s justified
They lost to Australia but they were chasing bloody 388
They lost against SA, the total again was too huge to chase (357)
They lost to Pakistan which was a tragedy, I think that was just a free point and the rule seems meh! I bet with just one or two wickets it would’ve been a different game.

And then ofcourse the semis. They’ve done pretty well and it’s going to be another WC where they exit in the semis, which is sad because I don’t think we’ll be seeing these dark horses again in such a deadly combination. They seem to have been slowly chipped away from that winning combination

You have to feel sorry for them! I know they have a WTC title but honestly I wished they’d still be in contention and let’s accept the fact that they’re the only team who actually gave India a hard time.

England just fizzled out.

Australia tried and were wrapped in just 199 runs but their confidence levels must’ve changed since then, so if we meet them in the finals, it would be interesting.

Pakistan was not even in contention skill-wise but just the hype!

SA just shat the bed for 85! Netherlands played better!

So yea NZ is a top team, they did really well and hopefully we’ll see them win other WC titles soon.

6

Kane Williamson!

The entire Wankhede was fawning over superstars tonight and the most underrate one has to be Kane Williamson. What a captain, just watch his post-match presentation and you have to give him props to see how he thinks and leads his side. I don’t know how Kane Williamson is running around the field taking those catches and scoring 50s, everytime he came back, he did something noteworthy, he’s a man of steel isn’t he?

His latest injury was an undisplaced fracture on his left thumb, that sounds painful to do anything on the field. I hope we see him with just one more World title like a T20 WC or maybe another 50-over World Cup, if he wants to play that long or if the 50-over format even survives till then.

Good luck with everything Kanos!

5

Shreyas Iyer!

It felt like a wrong day to score a hundred because this was like totally overshadowed. He hit most Sixes in a World Cup Innings by an Indian: Shreyas Iyer’s eight sixes in his century innings against New Zealand is now the record for the most sixes hit by an Indian in a World Cup innings.

Virat Kohli breaking records, Shami breaking records but hey guys look at this absolute pure shot hitting talent just copping a second consecutive 100 in the World Cup.

The other three people who got consecutive 100s are Rahul Dravid – 1999, Rohit Sharma – 2019, Shreyas Iyer – 2023.

He was attacking from the beginning and he hit the ball over every part of the stadium, there was just one maiden against Santner which I thought was very strategic but overall it was just glorious to watch him play those shots.

Gill who got injured, came back and hit 80 (66) is invisible almost! I bet if he stayed he would’ve easily hit a 100!

4

Daryl Mitchell!

Daryl Mitchell just took the fight to everyone didn’t he, the indian team was frustrated with this guy, he did it for the second time in the same tournament.

67 – Balls needed for Shreyas Iyer to complete his century, which is the fastest in an ODI World Cup knockout game. The previous fastest was by Adam Gilchrist, who got a century off 72 balls against Sri Lanka in the 2007 final.

5 ODI hundreds for Daryl Mitchell in 2023, equal with Shubman Gill and behind only Virat Kohli’s six

At one point, you could see Ashwin was chatting with Kuldeep, it’s supposed to be a spinning wicket but no wickets for spinners yet. Daryl Mitchel almost gave all Indians a nightmare. He deserves all the credit for that. They’re not comfortable tossing the ball up – or slowing it down – against him. Because they know he will launch them down the ground.

It’s one of the best 100s you’ll see in this world cup unfortunately while ending up on the losing side.

3

Captain Rohit Sharma!

Most Sixes in World Cup History: Rohit Sharma, with his four sixes in the semi-final, reached a total of 51, surpassing the legendary Chris Gayle’s record.

Most Sixes in a World Cup Edition: Rohit’s 28 sixes in the 2023 tournament set a new benchmark for the most sixes in a single World Cup edition.

Highest Team Total in ICC World Cup Knockouts: India’s 397/4 against New Zealand is now the highest team total in the history of ODI World Cup knockouts.

2

Virat Kohli

The man is a demi god breaking records of a perfect record. His gesture towards Sachin was absolutely wholesome. He actually broke the man’s record but still paid respect, that’s wholesome.

I love Sachin like any other citizen of this country and cricket but I think his tweet was pretty funny, seems like Sachin made the whole thing about himself. Go ahead and read the tweet, it felt like he was asserting some dominance “The first time I met you in the Indian dressing room, you were pranked by other teammates into touching my feet. I couldn’t stop laughing that day. But soon, you touched my heart with your passion and skill. I am so happy that that young boy has grown into a ‘Virat’ player.

I couldn’t be happier that an Indian broke my record. And to do it on the biggest stage – in the World Cup Semi-final – and at my home ground is the icing on the cake.

I won’t say more or I know I will be banned and I just started doing this!

Virat Kohli is a perfect example of a GOAT athlete but at the same time he never shies away from showing a soft side, thanking his wife, his family and calling it the most ideal moment for an achievement such as this, was a win for every cricket fan!

So now about all the records my man shattered!

50 ODI tons, that just is mental. 5000 runs just came off his centues. He beat the God himself and now looks like he might easily surpass 100 centuries. I can’t wait to see that happen!

So 43/50 hundreds have come in Indian wins (86% success rate). The shocking stat for me is, out of the 7 losses, only 4 of them have come in run chases! The Chase master truly.

He just made 711 runs in the 2023 World Cup again beating Tendulkar’s 673 runs set in the 2003 edition, marking him as the highest run-scorer in a single World Cup.

He got eight 50s! the most by any batter in a single edition of the ODI World Cup. Tendulkar in 2003 and Shakib Al Hasan in 2019 had seven 50-plus scores each.

1

Shami

Lala or Shami has to be no. 1 on everyone’s list, hell he’s even no. 1 on our Prime Minister’s list.

Truly the Man of the Match, he single-handedly just broke the New Zealand side when every other bowler was struggling.

With 7 for 57 –  Shami becomes the first Indian to take a seven-wicket haul in ODI cricket. Stuart Binny held the Indian record for best ODI figures with 6 for 4 against Bangladesh in 2014.

Shami is also the first bowler to take a seven-wicket haul in an ODI World Cup knockout game. Only one bowler had a seven-for in a men’s ODI knockout game before Shami – Aaqib Javed (7 for 37 vs India) in the 1991 Wills Trophy final.

4 – Five-wicket hauls for Shami in ODI World Cups, the most by any bowler, surpassing Mitchell Starc’s three five-fors. Shami bagged three five-wicket hauls in this tournament, the most in an edition of the ODI World Cup.

54 – Wickets for Shami in JUST 17 matches in ODI World Cups. He is the fastest bowler to reach the milestone of 50 wickets in the ODI World Cup, the second best is Starc in 19 games.

Most Wickets in a Single World Cup Edition For India: With a total of 23 wickets in this World Cup, Shami surpassed Zaheer Khan’s record of 21 wickets from the 2011 World Cup.

Most World Cup Five-Wicket Hauls: Shami’s four five-wicket hauls in World Cup matches are now the highest by any bowler, surpassing Mitchell Starc’s three.

Fastest to 50 World Cup Wickets: Achieving this milestone in just 17 innings, Shami outperformed Mitchell Starc (19), becoming the fastest to reach 50 wickets in World Cup history.

But… the pitch right, that’s what we want totalk about?

How can this team not win the match and the World Cup. It’ll take a million things going wrong for that to happen.
