Rahane’s Love for Cricket is Beyond Formats

Chennai Super Kings 235 for 4 (Rahane 71, Conway 56, Dube 50, Khejroliya 2-44) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 186 for 8 (Roy 61, Rinku 53, Theekshana 2-32, Deshpande 2-44) by 49 runs

In a breathtaking display of power-hitting, Chennai Super Kings set the IPL record for the highest first-innings score at Eden Gardens, nearly threatening the mark for most sixes in an innings. While they fell just three short of the record, they muscled their way to a formidable total courtesy of explosive performances from Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, and Devon Conway.

Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, faced a rough start, losing two wickets early in their chase and struggling to catch up throughout the match. As a result, they suffered their fourth consecutive defeat. With five wins in seven matches, MS Dhoni’s men claimed the top spot on the leaderboard, leading the logjam of five teams tied on eight points each.

Ajinkya Rahane led the six-hitting spree, smashing five of them during his whirlwind knock of 71 off 29 balls, providing the necessary impetus to Super Kings’ middle order along with Shivam Dube.

The duo’s partnership was nothing short of sensational: 85 runs in just 32 balls, featuring four fours and eight sixes. Adding to the spectacle was Devon Conway, who continued his brilliant form with a fourth consecutive half-century, building a strong foundation alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Their explosive 73-run opening stand in a mere 7.3 overs showcased a blend of immaculate timing, brute power, deft wrist work, and impressive muscle. KKR’s bowlers opted for a length-based approach initially when they realized there was limited swing on offer. However, Conway’s astute reading of the lengths enabled him to dispatch the deliveries with authority on both sides of the wicket.

Rahane’s exceptional over in the 14th saw him unleash three consecutive sixes against CSK, including a breathtaking pick-up shot, capitalizing on Umesh Yadav’s pace and showcasing his exquisite wristwork. Liberated from any restraints, Rahane embraced his new role as a destroyer instead of an anchor, elevating his game to new heights.

The enthralling passage of play continued as Rahane and the formidable Dube capitalized on their newfound freedom, making the bowling attack look pedestrian. Rahane reached his fifty off just 24 balls, while Dube achieved the milestone in 20 balls. The last five overs yielded a staggering 75 runs, leaving KKR feeling deflated as they headed into the break.

Jason Roy’s arrival only intensified the carnage as he wasted no time, hammering three consecutive sixes off Moeen Ali in just his second, third, and fourth balls. Roy’s power-packed slogs to the leg side and a beautifully executed reverse-sweep showcased his intent to dominate the bowlers. He raced to a rapid 19-ball half-century, leaving the equation for KKR at 109 runs required off 36 balls.

Despite Roy’s fireworks, KKR’s win percentage remained less than 1%, and their hopes were dashed further when he fell victim to a cleverly delivered full delivery from Maheesh Theekshana.

In the end, despite Rinku Singh’s valiant half-century, KKR could not overcome the massive target set by Chennai Super Kings, who emerged victorious with a commanding performance, securing their position at the top of the table.
