M18-42

Australia surged ahead of Pakistan in a masterful display of cricket prowess today, orchestrating a routine victory that showcased their dominance throughout the evening. What initially promised to be a nail-biter transformed into a clinical triumph for Australia, propelled by the destructive centuries from David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, leaving Pakistan struggling to counter the onslaught. Despite a commendable effort by Pakistan, posting 367 runs, Pat Cummins’ squad remained in control, securing a 62-run victory.

The turning point of the match, in hindsight, was evident during the first innings. Marsh’s early six against Shaheen Afridi set the tone, with both openers displaying aggression against Hasan Ali. Pakistan had a golden opportunity when Usama Mir, replacing Shadab Khan, failed to capitalize on a chance to dismiss Warner. Despite a resilient effort, Pakistan’s fielding deteriorated, further exemplified by Shafique’s drop of Warner and Babar Azam’s fumble against Steven Smith.

Australia capitalized on the lapses, plundering 101 runs in a 10-over span, setting the stage for Warner and Marsh to notch up centuries. Pakistan’s fielding woes continued, with Shafique missing another chance to dismiss Warner. Afridi, the standout bowler for Pakistan, eventually halted the Australian onslaught by removing Marsh and Glenn Maxwell in quick succession.

During the latter part of the Australian innings, Pakistan found their footing, with Afridi delivering a remarkable five-for in the 50th over. This superb death bowling limited Australia’s acceleration, and Pakistan carried the momentum into the break, restricting their opponents to 367.

Pakistan commenced their chase brightly, reaching 40 in the first five overs. However, Australia’s bowlers found the right lengths, slowing down the run rate. Shafique’s aggressive strokes briefly signaled Pakistan’s intent, but a cluster of wickets, including key dismissals of Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, and Babar, pushed them into a rebuilding phase.

Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan steadied the ship, but a well-timed catch by Stoinis and an excellent display of spin bowling by Adam Zampa shifted the balance. Despite Iftikhar Ahmed’s spirited efforts, Zampa’s final three-over spell proved decisive, taking crucial wickets and sealing Pakistan’s fate. Australia’s successive wins propel them up the table, gaining momentum as the tournament enters its crucial phase.
