Gill Strikes Again, Mohit and Tewatia Paddle a Win

Gill’s 67 lights up the scoreboard, slowly.

Gujarat Titans 154 for 4 beat Punjab Kings 153 for 8 by six wickets

IPL 2023 gets a less stressful relief day than the previous matches. However, it still needs the services of Iceman Rahul Tewatia for a scoop finish. Needing four balls from the last two balls, Tewatia calmly hits Sam Curran (who bowled perfectly) in the leg, allowing the Gujarat Titans to beat the Punjab Kings by six wickets. Having restricted Kings to 153 for 8 with a clinical show from the bowlers, Titans were cruising, led by a classy 49 (67) from Shubman Gill.

Gill and Saha have been the perfect pair in the past two seasons. While Gill was smoothing up the field with those cover drives, Saha quickly climbed the scoreboard giving the Titans an ideal start. On bowling front Mohit Sharma gets a break in a debut with the Titans. After winning the purple cap in 2014, a comeback was much awaited. After being a net bowler for the Titans last year, his work prompted the franchise to bid for him in 2023. He seemed determined from ball one, appealing an LBW, it didn’t happen in that ball, but it wouldn’t take him long to bag two crucial wickets – Jitesh Sharma and Sam Curran.

The Punjab Kings bowlers Rabada, Arshdeep and Curran bowled absolutely brilliantly; we only wish there were more runs on board to make the game more competitive.

The Titans 13 needed off 12; Arshdeep Singh bowled an impeccable penultimate over, only giving away six runs. Curran gets Gill off the second ball, this is the Curran we’ve been waiting to see since the World Cup. He followed the ball up with a perfect yorker which scurried David Miller almost ran him out. Tewatia just held his cool, like he usually does, and came out a winner.

Kings’ innings lacked lustre, and the dependence on Shikar Dhawan reminded me of the 90s and early 00s when Team India relied on Tendulkar. Matthew Short looked impressive from the start. He was calm, collected and stood still and got the team to 52 for 2 in the powerplay, but once Short fell to a Rashid Khan googly, the innings took a slow turn. If he didn’t strike, the rest of the team lost confidence. Rajapaksa managed 20 off 26 balls, Jitesh 25 (23), while Curran scored a run-a-ball 22. We expected someone to come and tonk during the final overs, but the fans were disappointed.
